You know that old chestnut; In Minnesota there are two seasons: winter and road construction? Well, the latter was causing a big problem for the Grand Marais Area Tourism Association. Major construction on Highway 61, the bridge connecting Grand Marais to tourists, had caused headaches as well as a drop in visitors. So we created the Scenic Scenic Route, a rebranding of the road work that encouraged travelers to embrace the detours and view it as a way to truly explore their journey. And while the traveling may have remained slow going, Grand Marais’ tourism numbers were most certainly not.
